One in four persons in Lebanon suffer from a psychiatric illness according the “Edraak Association” which means that approximately at least 1 million Lebanese need a particular psychiatric treatment and even hospitalization.
In parallel in accordance with the statistics of the internal security forces, a Lebanese commits suicide every 3 days whereas 15 suicide attempts happen every three days.
The figures show that total of psychiatric treatment would be very high if all the affected persons receive the adequate treatment. But reality shows that the problem is fundamental and widespread as explained by the psychiatrist Dr. Joseph El Khouri who confirms that there are many patients who do not receive treatment because of its high cost.
Despite the fact that the Lebanese government covers psychiatric treatment similarly to other medical conditions it excludes hospitalizations except for “Hopital De La Croix” and it also excludes also the psychiatric treatment which is basic with a high cost. When it comes to insurance companies they do not recognize psychiatric illnesses and do not cover it except one company.
