The citizens not covered by health insurance represent the majority i.e. 86% of citizens in Saudi Arabia in 2017 according to national statistics. However, the percentage of non-citizens covered by health insurance was 75.4% according to “Okaz”.
The spokesperson of the insurance sector in KSA, Mr. Adel Issa said that this percentage is natural since compulsory health insurance originally targeted non-Saudis working in the private sector in order to decrease the burden on governmental hospitals. Moreover, with the development of legislations, health insurance now covers Saudis working in the private sector. Unfortunately, there is still a number of Saudis working in the private sector who are uninsured until now, so a mechanism is being introduced to add them to the health insurance system according to the “Makkah newspaper”.
