Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI)’s health and medical services sector committee chaired by board member Adel Hassan Al A’ali has held a forum on the impact of implementing the National Health Insurance Scheme on the private sector.
The seminar hosted representatives from the Ministry of Health, the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA), the Supreme Council for Health (SCH), committee members, alongside two speakers who discussed the Canadian and Indian experiences in implementing similar schemes.
Participants expressed concern about the scheme and its outcomes, particularly in light of the ambiguity with regard to its implementation added to the fact that a number of countries which implemented similar schemes failed to achieve the desired results. They underlined the importance of having access to detailed data about the scheme prior to its implementation so as to allow relevant bodies ample time to prepare and adapt. Participants also expressed concern about the possible negative outcomes, key among which is turning the health sector into a profitable sector, and the wavering or decline in the income of local doctors.
In contrast, the panelists stressed the prospect of the National Health Insurance scheme in enhancing health care in Bahrain and reforming the sector. They highlighted its potentials in increasing the efficiency of operations, optimizing resources, and boosting the contribution of the private sector.
