UAE – No health insurance for psychiatric patients

Psychiatric patients asked private insurance companies to add psychiatric and neurological cases to the health insurance cover. They clarified that the total annual cost of their treatment exceeds AED 22 thousands. This high prohibitive cost leads many patients to stop treatment, so this can worsen their medical situation.
Moreover, psychiatric consultants confirmed that the cost of psychiatric medicines is higher than the cost of other medicines. They indicated that some patients do not visit psychiatric clinics unless their situation reaches a critical phase. This is due to the absence of medical insurance coverage thereby pushing patients toward isolation. Mr. Salem Al-Shamsi, member of the Federal National Council and head of the health and environmental committee said that the committee plans to address the inclusion of psychiatric cases in medical insurance during the next legislative session.
