UK - mortality trends to drive reserve releases

RBC Capital Markets has reported that a group of actuaries remains confident the recent slowdown in life expectancy in the UK and elsewhere around the world is a fundamental shift, with the trend continuing into 2017, which is expected to result in greater reserve releases for insurers.
Analysts at RBC reported last month that new mortality assumptions were more than just a blip, in response to the release of the 2016 version of the UK mortality tables (CMI_2016). And now, RBC analysts have commented on the high number of deaths seen so far in 2017, which, although below 2015’s levels for this time of year, exceeds that of every other year since 2012.
