Abu Dhabi – AED 10 thousand health insurance hinders residency

The new health insurance programs in Abu Dhabi prevented resident employees in the Emirate from renewing their residency permits since the cost of health insurance cost became unbearable for some small and medium sized companies, so they did not secure health insurance cards for their employees especially those above age 60. As a result huge fines in millions of Dirhams were imposed for the non-renewal of health insurance cards bearing in mind that the employee is unable to complete residency permit procedures and can no longer receive services.
A number of affected persons complained about the new health insurance system and the injustice it causes as some companies and schools charged them for health insurance even though it is against the law. Therefore, these employers announced clearly that the employee has to pay for the insurance premium in order to maintain his job. Perhaps the old-age category above 60 is the most affected by the health insurance regulations which lead companies to pay premiums that can reach AED 10 thousand annually.
