An English-speaking Emirati daily conveyed the opinion of experts in the health sector that around USD 1 billion i.e. more than AED 3.6 billion are being wasted in expensive medicine bills and unnecessary medical tests and procedures as well as the abuse of insured patients. This cost is borne by health insurance companies. The daily newspaper clarified that these cases include identity fraud and imposing medicines, which are very expensive but are not effectively needed.
Mark Adams, CEO of Anglo Arabian Healthcare clarified that the health insurance system is developing the means to address this problem. He also confirmed the existence of unnecessary claims submitted to insurance companies in addition to the unprofessional practices of some physicians and insurance companies. So he indicated that these issues necessitate collaboration between health authorities and health service providers. And he noted that physicians also obtain 30% of diagnostic fees in some cases according to “The National”.
