The health insurance market in the Kingdom is expected to witness competition between government and private hospitals since some government hospitals are shifting to offer health services against fees. Thus government hospitals are expected to attract 50% of the patients of private hospitals.
Moreover, the health insurance expert Mr. Ahmed Al-Raqeeba said that government hospitals enjoy a high level of quality especially the military hospitals, in addition to the presence of highly qualified medical staff and adequate resources, indicating that government hospitals have lower prices than private hospitals given the strict control exercised by the ministry of health.
Al-Raqeeba said that government hospitals will collect SAR 5.5 billion from the health insurance market in the Kingdom of which the total claims reached SAR 11.5 billion in year 2014 according to SAMA. He clarified that the participation of government hospitals in providing their services to insurance policyholders is the first step in preparing these government hospitals to the project of the insurance coverage of citizens during the next five years.
